Come see how using simple die cut shadow layers can really create a lot of depth on your cards.

Adding depth and dimension to your handmade cards can really amp them up and there are lots of ways to create that look. One of the quickest and easiest is to add die cut shadow layers behind elements for some instant pop. Today Jamie has used a simple black shadow to “lift” her beautifully designed leaf element and the effect is just so pretty!

Jamie said her inspiration for this card was seeing all of the leaves fall off her trees where she is in Oklahoma. She says “I love leaves and think they are perfect for any occasion!” Well when you style your card like this, they sure are! Let’s see how she did it!

First, Jamie used our Repeating Bricks Stencil to create a background on watercolor paper using pink and maroon glitter paste. Be sure to wash the stencil right away with warm soapy water so the paste does not become one with the stencil!

Once the paste is dry, die-cut the panel using one of the dies from our Nested Square Stitch Die Set.

To complete this element, Jamie chose a green square card base and, taking pieces of white and black card stock, cut them to create equidistant layers between the bricks and her card base. She layered her die cut bricks over the black square, adhered the white square to the card base and than popped her brick element onto her card with some dimensional adhesive.

Next Jamie cut a piece of white card stock with our Flower #5 Die Cut and applied Moss and Basil Color Fuse Inks from Set #10 using a blending brush. She then stamped her leaf with our French Script Background with Onyx Black VersaFine Ink.

Jamie cut her die cut shadow layer by using the same Flower # 5 die and some black card stock. She adhered her stamped and inked die cut over the shadow layer slightly offset to create that crisp, realistic shadow which then offers that appearance of elevation off the card front.

For her sentiment, Jamie stamped “Thankful” from our Kittie Say Phrases #1 on a strip of white card stock with black ink. She trimmed it into a banner shape and adhered it to her her card at a playful angle with some dimensional adhesive. As a last step she added tiny sweet bow of black and white baker’s twine to the sentiment and her card was ready!
