Sammi, one of our amazing new designers, came up with this adorable handmade hippo slimline birthday card and we are absolutely in LOVE with these cute little friends! Sammi said she got her inspiration for this projects once she laid eyes on these little cuties and since she loves a scene card, envisioned them cavorting across a slimline sized card. Let’s take a look at how she made this so we can make one, too!

First Sammi cut out the slimline panel and grass using our Slimline Squares Frame and Slimline Grass die. She then ink blended the grass with Color Fuse inks from sets #10 and #11 and ink blended the clouds with our Clouds stencil with Color Fuse inks from set #8. Then glued the two layers of grass together and then adhered them onto the slimline panel.

Then she cut out the Birthday sentiment using the Birthday Script w/ shadow die and ink blended the pieces with Color Fuse inks from sets #1, #2 and #5 and adhered them together for a nice thick, dimensional effect.

Next Sammi stamped those crazy cute hippos, balloons and presents from our Hippo stamp set with Memento black ink and cut them out with our coordinating Hippo die set. PRO TIP: Sammi says “I always die cut first before coloring just in case my dies shift while die cutting and I don’t ruin my coloring.” She then colored the images with her Copic markers. For the present with the balloons, she also added some clouds in the empty space between the present and the balloons with the cloud stencil so it would blend with the background.

Sammie then put together her scene using foam tape to add dimension to her die cut elements. She stamped the Hippo sentiment from the Hippo stamp set and cut it down into a small square and added a cloud background with the Cloud stencil so it will blend with the background. She popped it into the card with some more foam adhesive and finished off the scene with some little pearly embellishments.

To complete the whole card, Sammi took a piece of bright yellow card stock and using Color Fuse inks from Set #2, she stenciled some clouds over it to echo the design on the die cut background. She then layered this onto a piece of dark pink card stock and then layered the whole thing onto her white slimline card base.
