Today in the US we celebrate Labor Day and while a three day weekend is always welcomed, this day is special for everyone who works in any capacity.
Labor Day marks the day in 1894 that Congress declared the first Monday in September a national holiday to honor our nation’s workers and all their contributions to the economic strength of our country.
The date was chosen to honor the first “Labor Day parade” where in 1882 on September 5th, a Tuesday, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City in protest of unfair and unsafe working conditions. This led to the idea of a worker’s holiday to be celebrated on the first Monday in September which caught on in many states, some of which legislated making it a holiday with it eventually becoming the federal holiday we celebrate today.
Today many people recognize Labor Day as the end of the summer season thought this year summer doesn’t officially end until September 23rd at 2:49 am. Lots of people celebrate the weekend with outdoor parties but we say indoor activities, like, oh we don’t know, maybe STAMPING!!!!!! are just as appropriate!
However you celebrate, enjoy a day off from the work you do – no matter what kind it may be – and treat yourself to some relaxation and fun.
Happy Labor Day!
